Our first Material Lab Watercolour Workshop, scheduled for Saturday, 7 February 2026, is now fully booked. The next session will run on Saturday, 7 March 2026. Bookings are essential due to limited spaces. Art Box Workshops is excited to launch the first stage of our new Material Lab Program, beginning with immersive Watercolour Mixing Workshops designed to teach children and families about the traditional, eco-friendly art materials used in their creation. These workshops focus exclusively on hand-crafted watercolours, created using natural Earth mineral pigments and plant-based binders. Participants learn where colours come from, how they were historically produced, and how sustainable art practices support both creativity and the environment. Each mixing station is shared by two people — a child aged 8 years or older and their caregiver or an older sibling (11 years or older). Each participant will create their own paints and take home a complete handmade watercolour set with care instructions. Workshop time: 9:00 am – 12:00 noon (3 hours). Creative Kids vouchers ($50) can be applied to the child’s booking.  Watercolour sets per person. 12 Colours Included, each station be responsible for two colour mixes  Yellow Orange Red Rose Purple Cobalt Blue Marine Blue Green Vert Gum Green Beige Burnt Umber Black What’s Included in Your Workshop Fee Premium Handmade Art Materials Natural, non-toxic, archival watercolours Earth Mineral Pigments (including French ochres and historical colours) Plant-based binders handcrafted in the studio High-quality watercolour papers and tools All ingredients needed to create your own paints Specialised Learning Experience Step-by-step instruction in traditional watercolour-making Exploration of pigment history, culture, and science Professional guidance in sustainable studio practices A supportive slow-art environment that fosters focus and creativity Take-Home Materials Every participant receives: Their own handmade watercolour palette An artwork created using their paints Colour charts and process notes Skills and knowledge to recreate the process at home Small Class Sizes Workshops are intentionally limited to ensure: 6 mixing stations, 2 family members per station. Looking Ahead As we continue to grow, Art Box Workshops is evolving into a centre for sustainable creativity, mentorship, and environmental learning. Our vision extends beyond traditional art classes, shaping a future where young people harness their creativity as a powerful tool for advocacy, connection, and positive change. We are committed to: Expanding Mentorship and Training for Emerging Art Educators We aim to support the next generation of creative teachers by providing structured mentorship, hands-on training, and specialised development in sustainable art practices. Our program will share the methods we have refined over many years—grounded in Earth Mineral Pigments, eco-conscious studio processes, and child-centred learning. Partnering with Like-Minded Schools and Community Groups Through collaborative projects, shared workshops, and community exhibitions, we will continue building networks with schools, environmental organisations, and youth-focused programs that value creativity, nature, and cultural awareness. Developing Sustainable Studio Models Nationwide Art Box Workshops is committed to modelling a studio practice that is safe, low-waste, and environmentally responsible. We aim to share this framework with other educators and creative spaces, demonstrating how traditional pigment knowledge and modern sustainability can coexist in a vibrant learning environment. Offering Children Opportunities to Use Art for Real-World Advocacy We believe art is a voice. Through a growing suite of programs, students will learn how creativity can support environmental advocacy and community action. This will include: Training in creating non-toxic art materials Children and educators will learn to make handmade paints, eco-friendly inks, and natural drawing materials using Earth Mineral Pigments. Environmentally focused printmaking and mixed-media projects Students will create artworks that tell the stories of threatened species, local ecosystems, and conservation issues. Collaborative art workshops for kids and corporate team-building groups These sessions will foster creative problem-solving, environmental awareness, and teamwork through large-scale art installations and pigment-based activities. Fun activism games and creative experiences Including role-playing, mock conservation elections, and storytelling through art to enhance understanding of leadership and advocacy. Guided bush excursions with rewilding and conservation groups Participants will learn directly from nature stewards, gaining insight into habitat restoration, local ecosystems, and practical ways to support conservation efforts. Through these initiatives, we aim to cultivate confident, compassionate young people who feel empowered to speak up for the natural world. If you share our values — whether you are a parent, teacher, carer, environmental educator, or creative professional — we welcome you to connect with us as we build this next chapter. Together, we can inspire a generation of young artists who care deeply about the world they are helping to shape.
