  Term 1 2025 – Drawing and painting: Ages 6–8 years Class schedule: 4:00 pm - 5.30 pm, 3.30 pm studio opens and afternoon tea provided (walking bus service from Neutral Bay Public school) Mondays: 20th October – 8th December Tuesdays: 21st October – 9th December Our Term 1 program for young artists introduces the fundamentals of drawing and watercolour painting in a nurturing and creative environment. This course is perfect for children in Years 1–3 who are beginning their artistic journey and ready to explore colour, shape, and imagination. What makes this term special Art Box Workshops has transitioned to using our handmade, eco-friendly watercolours, crafted from natural Earth pigments and plant-based binders. Students begin the term with a gentle introduction to how watercolours are made, where pigments come from, and how colours interact. What students will learn Across the 8 weeks, students will explore: Colour theory (painting their own colour wheel) Shadow and grounding to make objects look real Sketching fruits and simple still-life forms Designing and painting patterned fruit bowls Watercolour layering techniques for depth and texture Composition and background development Creating a final major artwork using all learned skills Each child will complete a beautifully framed still-life painting and a portfolio of sketches, pattern designs, and developmental artwork, showcasing their creative process from start to finish.   Term 1 2026 – Drawing and painting: Years 4–6 (Ages 9–12) Class Schedule Time: 4:00 pm – 6:00 pm (Studio opens at 3:30 pm. Afternoon tea provided. Walking bus available from Neutral Bay Public School.) Wednesdays: 11th of February – 1st of April. Thursdays: 12th of February – 2nd of April. In Term 1, our older students dive deeper into the fundamentals of drawing and painting through a structured, skill-building program using Global Colours VOC-free acrylic paints. We begin the term with an introduction to how acrylics are made, where pigments come from, and the foundations of colour theory. Students will explore a series of guided painting studies designed to strengthen their technique and creative decision-making. Early in the term, they will create an abstract colour study using a minimal palette, learning to mix from the colour wheel and understand tonal variation. As the term progresses, students will learn to: Ground objects convincingly using shadow and light Paint a range of textures and surfaces, including: • glass (reflection and sheen) • fabric (folds and softness) • fur (direction, layering, and movement) Apply multiple layers of acrylic paint to build form, depth, and realistic detail Midway through the term, students will choose a personal object to inspire their final artwork. After photographing and sketching their chosen item, they will use their earlier studies to develop a thoughtfully composed final acrylic painting on canvas, guided in their choices of colour, shape, balance, and composition. This course supports older students in developing stronger technical confidence while encouraging self-expression and individual creative style. Class Approach A skills-focused, age-appropriate introduction to acrylic painting, texture studies, tonal work, and composition, supporting students as they move into more complex artistic techniques. Developing Sustainable Studio Models Nationwide Art Box Workshops is committed to modelling a studio practice that is safe, low-waste, and environmentally responsible. We aim to share this framework with other educators and creative spaces, demonstrating how traditional pigment knowledge and modern sustainability can coexist in a vibrant learning environment. Offering Children Opportunities to Use Art for Real-World Advocacy We believe art is a voice. Through a growing suite of programs, students will learn how creativity can support environmental advocacy and community action. This will include: Training in creating non-toxic art materials Children and educators will learn to make handmade paints, eco-friendly inks, and natural drawing materials using Earth Mineral Pigments. Environmentally focused printmaking and mixed-media projects Students will create artworks that tell the stories of threatened species, local ecosystems, and conservation issues. Collaborative art workshops for kids and corporate team-building groups These sessions will foster creative problem-solving, environmental awareness, and teamwork through large-scale art installations and pigment-based activities. Fun activism games and creative experiences Including role-playing, mock conservation elections, and storytelling through art to enhance understanding of leadership and advocacy. Guided bush excursions with rewilding and conservation groups Participants will learn directly from nature stewards, gaining insight into habitat restoration, local ecosystems, and practical ways to support conservation efforts. Through these initiatives, we aim to cultivate confident, compassionate young people who feel empowered to speak up for the natural world.
