Art Box Workshops, 35 Barry Lane, Neutral Bay
An eight-week portraiture course for growing artists who are ready to deepen their observational drawing, painting and composition skills.
Students will study proportion, facial features, light and shadow, colour strategy and composition before developing a meaningful portrait of a family member, mentor, friend, person they admire or themselves.
Each student will work through the creative process—from initial sketches and composition planning to painting, refinement and presentation. They will also develop a thoughtful artist statement that communicates the subject’s significance and the ideas behind their artwork.

- Portrait and figurative sketching
• Facial proportions and individual features
• Thumbnails and composition planning
• Light, shadow and colour relationships
• Underpainting, layering, edges and details
• Ethical use of reference photographs and consent
• Finishing and professionally presenting artwork
• Writing and refining an authentic artist statement
OUR APPROACH
We value well-being, individual expression and the creative process over prizes. Students are encouraged to develop courage, craftsmanship and an artistic voice while working at an appropriate level of challenge.
Families may choose an optional Young Archie pathway. Relevant format requirements, artwork photography and submission preparation will be discussed in class. Participation in the competition is never compulsory.
TUTOR
Julia Sawicki is an artist and experienced art educator who has taught children’s portraiture for more than ten years. Her professional experience includes portrait commissions and selection as a finalist in the Doug Moran National Portrait Prize.
All quality art materials are included.

Students will explore colour, facial expression and storytelling while creating portraits of people who matter to them. This might be a sibling, grandparent, friend, parent, mentor or themselves. Through guided drawing and painting activities, children will learn the foundations of portraiture and develop a finished artwork accompanied by a simple artist statement written in their own voice. WHAT STUDENTS WILL EXPLORE Basic facial shapes, features and placement • Figurative drawing and observation • Expressive colour mixing • Pattern, texture and composition • How portraits can communicate personality and story • How to discuss and write about their artwork OUR APPROACH We focus on enjoyment, creative growth, and confidence—not prizes. Every stage is carefully guided and suited to younger primary-aged students. Families who are interested in the Young Archie competition may choose an optional, no-pressure pathway. We will provide guidance on artwork requirements, photography, and artist statements during the course. Entry is never compulsory. More InfoMaterial Lab Watercolour Mixing Workshop Art Box Workshops is proud to introduce the first stage of our Material Lab Program — an immersive exploration into the origins of colour and the craft of traditional watercolour making. This hands-on workshop is dedicated exclusively to creating artist-quality watercolours using natural Earth mineral pigments and plant-based binders, handcrafted in our studio. Participants will discover where pigments come from, how historical colours were produced, and why sustainable material practices matter in contemporary art-making. A Shared Creative Experience Designed for children aged 5 years and older who are attending with a parent, carer, or guardian. Each family works together at a dedicated mixing station, learning the traditional process of grinding, binding, and refining their own paints. The Experience Over 90 minutes, families will: • Learn traditional watercolour-mixing techniques and the history of pigment • Work with non-toxic, archival materials • Experience a calm, focused, slow-art environment What You Will Create Each child will: • Handcraft their own watercolour paint• Create an artwork using the freshly mixed watercolours• Take home a printed card designed by our term-time students of a Native Australian Animal with samples of our handmade watercolours.
