Building Confident Young Artists through Portraiture

At Art Box Workshops, our Term 4 Portraiture Program has become one of the highlights of our year. Over eight inspiring weeks, children learn how to observe carefully, paint with confidence and create portraits that celebrate the people who matter most in their lives. Whether it’s a parent, grandparent, sibling, friend, mentor or themselves, each student creates a portrait that reflects not only what they see, but also what they feel.

Portraits That Build More than Artistic Skills

Portraiture is one of the most rewarding forms of art education because it develops so many important skills simultaneously.
As children learn to draw facial proportions, mix colours and observe subtle details, they are also developing patience, concentration, empathy and confidence. They begin to understand that every face is unique and every person has a story worth telling.
Throughout the course, students gradually build their artwork over multiple weeks, learning professional techniques while discovering their own artistic style.

Portrait Classes for students ages 6-8.

During the eight-week program, they learn:

  • Simple facial proportions and feature placement.
  • Pencil sketching, developing tones and texture for facial features including clothing.
  • Polymer paint fundamentals in colour theory and mixing for facial features and clothing.
  • How to sketch, draw, and paint a portrait of a favourite thing that you like to do.
  • How to write about their artwork with confidence

Each child completes a finished portrait drawn in pencil and painted with polymer paints, as well as a self-portrait that expresses what they love most. Introducing visual storytelling and having them write a simple artist statement in their own words to help them reflect on their creative journey.

Our philosophy is simple: Joy comes before prizes. Confidence comes before perfection.

Portrait Classes for Students Ages 9 –12.

Older students are ready to develop stronger observational drawing and painting skills while creating meaningful portraits of people or animals they admire.

Throughout the course, students explore:

  • Proportions and anatomy
  • Light and shadow
  • Colour and composition
  • Underpainting and layered painting techniques
  • Refining and adding detail
  • Ethical use of reference photographs
  • Photographing artwork
  • Writing a thoughtful artist statement

Students also learn how artists develop ideas over time rather than expecting perfection from the first sketch.

Artist Statements Matter

One unique aspect of our portrait program is that every student learns to write about their artwork. We encourage children to think about why they chose their subject and what they hope viewers will feel when they see the finished portrait. Learning to communicate ideas is an important life skill that builds confidence well beyond the art studio.

Optional Young Archie Preparation

Many families ask about the Young Archie competition. For students who are interested, we explain the artwork requirements, artist statements, presentation standards and submission process during class. There is never any pressure to enter.

Our focus remains on helping every child create their strongest artwork while enjoying the creative process. Any competition entry simply becomes an extension of the skills developed during the course.

Learn from an Experienced Portrait Artist

Classes are taught by Julia Sawicki, co-founding director of Art Box Workshops.
Julia has been teaching children’s portraiture for more than a decade and is an exhibiting and commissioned portrait artist, with experience as a finalist in the Doug Moran Portrait Prize. Her teaching combines professional artistic techniques with a warm, encouraging environment where children are supported to develop at their own pace.
